When the Roman leader Titus captured Jerusalem and destroyed the Second Temple, he took the menorah to Rome as the symbol of the destruction of Jerusalem, the Holy Temple, and the Jewish people. He had a copy of it, carried on the shoulders of Jewish slaves taken captive in Jerusalem, carved on his victory arch in Rome. But the lights of the menorah were not dimmed. Over the centuries, thousands of menorahs have been kindled in Israel and throughout the Diaspora as each generation signals its belief that the light of Israel's independence would be relit.
