The Sages at the time of the Chanuka miracle did not institute Chanuka as a formal holiday until a full year later. Why did they wait so long to fix these days as an annual fesitval?
And another question: The miracle of oil not getting burned up was not unique to Chanuka. It happened every day in the Sanctuary when the High Priest lit the Menorah. Day after day, the Priest would pour just enough oil to last the night yet find that none of it had burned by the morning! And this miracle didn’t just happen for eight days. It occurred for many years! Yet, this miracle is not commemorated. So what is unique about the the Chanuka miracle?
One question answers the other: When the Chanuka miracle took place the Sages certainly gave thanks, but they didn’t feel it a reason to institute these days as a fixed time to celebrate each year. After all, such miracles have taken place before in Jewish history. It was only a year later, when the 25th of Kislev came around again, that they realized that latent within these days is a special spiritual force, a power for the impossible to happen… a power that manifests itself every year during these days and that can still be tapped into today.
Yes, the miracle of oil not being burned up was a daily occurrence in the Temple. But it has no bearing on our lives today and so is no longer celebrated. But embedded into the days of Chanuka is the power for the impossible to happen. This is one of the ideas alluded to in the words of the blessing, “In those days, at this time - בימים ההם בזמן הזה.” The miracle was in those days, but is also in this time, meaning at this time of year.
Chanuka is a time for miracles, both in those days and ours.
